Email

The campus email system is called "CruzMail." Support for CruzMail is provided by ITS. See their CruzMail pages for more info.

CruzMail works with either client email programs (like Eudora) or through the web. The CruzMail web page is more limited in function than email client programs and mainly useful when traveling.

We do NOT recommend the use of Microsoft Outlook as an email client program. Outlook is uniquely vulnerable to virus infection. It's possible to get your PC infected by simply rolling the mouse over a message listed in the INBOX if using Outlook.

All UCSC faculty, staff, and students should use their CruzMail address for University business. Other email providers such as HotMail do not provide the security and reliability necessary for University email. Campus directory lookup systems generally only tell a person's CruzMail address.

Each person is given one and only one email address in CruzMail. Additional email addresses for departments, groups, and positions can be made in two ways: (Talk with ITS for further clarification.)

  • One way is to make an email list. Email sent to the list address gets forwarded to all the addresses on the list and is mixed in with the other email. There is no separate password for the address. You can have most any name you want but it has to be identifiable as a list. For example "psychstudylist@ucsc.edu". Then you specify one or more email addresses for that list. Request a mailing list at http://its.ucsc.edu/services/help_desk/mailinglists.php
  • The other way is to make a functional email account. These are separate email addresses with a separate password. They are not @ucsc.edu but rather @socsci-mail.ucsc.edu instead. You can read the mail either on the web or with a second personality in Eudora. Request functional email accounts from the Social Sciences Divisional Liaison
Note that email is usually only kept on the CruzMail server for only a few days after it is downloaded and read with an email client program. Tape backup copies of all email are kept but are generally not accessible to users. To be certain you do not lose email you should make backup copies of your mailboxes. Here are instructions on using division file servers to make backups.
