Federal & Private Funding Searches

  • FundSource: FundSource is a tool designed to help behavioral and social scientists find research funding. It has been designed to be specific to behavioral and social science research, freely available with no subscription costs, and responsive to your needs and feedback.
  • Community of Science: Community of Science (COS) is the leading global resource for hard-to-find information critical to scientific research and other projects across all disciplines.

Federal Funding Searches

  • Grants.gov: The single access point for over 1,000 grant programs offered by the 26 federal grant-making agencies. 
  • National Science Foundation: This is by far the most common federal agency from which Social Sciences Division faculty request funding. Most social sciences grants fall under the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences directorate or the Education and Human Resources directorate.
  • National Institutes of Health: The most common NIH agencies the Social Sciences Divisions has received funding from are the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
  • Ed.gov: The Guide to U.S. Department of Education Programs and Resources, commonly referred to as the Guide to ED Programs, provides an overview of all Department of Education programs authorized and funded under federal law.

State Funding Searches

  • State of California Grants: The Division of Social Sciences does not receive much research grant funding from the State, but it is worth a look. This website from UC Berkeley’s Office of Sponsored Projects has links to most California grant opportunities for research projects.

Private Foundation Funding Searches

The Foundation Center’s Foundation Directory Online: UCSC’s University Relations subscribes to this site for development staff. Access by faculty and students is available by appointment. Call or e-mail Cliff Anderson, director of development research, at 459-4329 or cliff@ucsc.edu.
