Funding Source:            UC Institute for Research in the Arts
Title:                                 UCIRA Major Grants Program
Program:                         Funding will be offered to proposals in disciplinary clusters on a two-year alternating cycle, with Performance Practice and Research and Literature funded in the 2010 cycle and Visual Arts Practice and Research, and Emerging Fields funded in 2011. In keeping with the mission of the Institute, UCIRA funding is intended to support projects, both individual and collaborative that represent the most innovative and relevant arts research taking place within the UC system. Quality and depth of proposals will be the primary consideration for evaluation over questions of campus or disciplinary representation. We continue to have an interest in work that encourages curricular development and innovative resource-sharing within individual campuses and/or across two or more UC campuses, as well as expanded praxis/participation-oriented proposals in which UC faculty and/or students partner as co-researchers and co-learners with representatives from a broad range of off-campus communities, organizations and agencies. UCIRA is committed to supporting risk-taking research that might not otherwise find funding from other University or extramural sources. We encourage you to consult with UCIRA staff before submitting a proposal.

Title:                                 Fostering Interdisciplinary Research on Education (FIRE)
Program:                         FIRE is a strand of the Research and Evaluation on Education in Science and Engineering (REESE) program (NSF 10-586) and it is anticipated that FIRE will eventually be incorporated into the REESE solicitation. The FIRE program seeks to facilitate the process by which scholars can cross disciplinary boundaries to acquire the skills and knowledge that would improve their abilities to conduct rigorous research on STEM learning and education. The primary goal of the strand is to facilitate the development of innovative theoretical, methodological, and analytic approaches to understanding complex STEM education issues of national importance and, by so doing, make progress toward solving them. A secondary goal of the strand is to broaden and deepen the pool of investigators engaged in STEM educational research. In order to address this goal, investigators must pair with a mentoring scholar in a to-be-learned field of interest. Proposals therefore have both a research and a professional development component. Investigators may receive a FIRE award at any point in their post-graduate careers.

Title:                                 UC Mexus-Conacyt-Grants for Collaborative Proposals
Program:                         The University of California Institute for Mexico and the United States (UC MEXUS) and El Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT) are pleased to announce a call for proposals to provide seed funding to teams of UC and Mexican researchers with beginning projects in basic and applied collaborative research, instructional development, and public service and education projects that apply research to public issues. The primary objective of the program is to enable the establishment of new collaborative initiatives with the potential for creating permanent ties between UC campuses and Mexican institutions that will grow and continue with the support of other institutional and extramural funds. Therefore, proposals for expansion or continuation of ongoing projects, as well as dissemination of research results of earlier work through binational conferences and publications, will be considered a lower priority.

The primary objective of this program is to advance academic ties and exchange between emerging Mexican researchers and UC scientists and scholars in the early stages of their careers, after obtaining their Ph.D. In addition, the program seeks to support existing or developing binational academic networks by enhancing collaborative research projects between UC and Mexican faculty and institutions through the innovative involvement and training of new researchers.
