Title:                          Evolutionary Processes

Program:                   The Evolutionary Processes Cluster supports research on microevolutionary processes and their macroevolutionary consequences. Topics include mutation, gene flow, recombination, natural selection, genetic drift, assortative mating acting within species, speciation, and long-term features of evolution. These investigations attempt to explain causes and consequences of genetically-based change in the properties of groups of organisms (at the population level or higher) over the course of generations as well as large-scale patterns of evolutionary change, phylogeography, origin and maintenance of genetic variation, and molecular signatures of evolution at the population or species level. The cluster seeks to fund projects that are transformative -- that is, those that will change the conceptual bases of evolutionary biology and have broad implications for future research.  Both empirical and theoretical approaches are encouraged. The Cluster is comprised of two programs, Evolutionary Genetics and Evolutionary Ecology (described below); proposals should be submitted to one of these programs.

Title:                          NSF Scholarship in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM)

Program:                   This program makes grants to institutions of higher education to support scholarships for academically talented, financially needy students, enabling them to enter the workforce following completion of an associate; baccalaureate; or graduate-level degree in science and engineering disciplines. Grantee institutions are responsible for selecting scholarship recipients, reporting demographic information about student scholars, and managing the S-STEM project at the institution.

The program does not make scholarship awards directly to students; students should contact their institution’s Office of Financial Aid for this and other scholarship opportunities.

Deadline:                        Letter of Intent: July 13, 2011

Title:                                Teaching, Learning, and Instructional Resources

Program:                        The Spencer Foundation provides funding for investigations that promise to yield new knowledge about education in the United States or abroad. The foundation funds research grants that range in size from smaller grants that can be completed within a year, to larger, multi-year endeavors.

Concerned with advancing the learning and development of children and adults, Spencer is interested in studies that lead to better understanding and improvements in the intellectual, material, and organizational resources that contribute to successful teaching and learning. A key aim of research in this initiative is to support investigations of questions that are grounded directly in teaching practice as well as in research about important aspects of teaching and learning processes that hold promise for enriching opportunities to learn and for guiding informed policymaking. The foundation is particularly interested in studies of teaching and teacher development.

Deadline:                     Small Grants Program: July 9, 2011 & Large Grants Program: Rolling

Title:                             Environmental Grants

Program:                     The Environment Program makes grants to conserve the North American West and to tackle the problems of energy and climate change. The program pursues four broad goals designed to help protect the planet for generations to come:

1. Conserve the Western United States and Canada for wildlife and people

2. Slow global climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions

3. Ensure that the United States energy supply is clean and consumption is efficient

4. Address environmental problems that disproportionately affect disadvantaged communities in the San Francisco Bay Area

The Environment Program pursues these goals by supporting public policy development and advocacy. It also engages influential groups that care about the environment but whose voices and concerns have not always been part of the traditional environmental movement, such as hunters, anglers, ranchers, Latinos, and Native Americans.

Title:                            Templeton Freedom Award for Social Entrepreneurship

Program:                    The Templeton Freedom Awards recognizes outstanding achievements from privately funded, nonprofit research institutes ("think tanks"). The Templeton Freedom Award for Social Entrepreneurship recognizes outstanding research and innovative projects on social entrepreneurship to benefit the poor, increased cooperation among think tanks, the private sector organizations for the free society; and general building of a sound, strong, civil society. Achievements that qualify for application include one of the following for each application: a completed project, an ongoing program with an existing track record, or a body of work that is relevant to this prize category. Institutes should not submit new or potential projects, as Templeton Freedom Awards are only awarded to recognize existing work.

Deadline:                   July 1, 2011

Title:                            Request for Research Proposals

Program:                    Earthwatch's mission is to engage people worldwide in scientific field research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment. Accordingly, and in order to build long-term legacies through supported scientific research, Earthwatch has developed four Research Areas (RAs):

- Ecosystem Services

- Climate Change

- Oceans

- Cultural Heritage

These RAs allow Earthwatch to focus support on critical ecological and cultural challenges encompassing the majority of threats to environmental sustainability. The RAs work together to support research, capacity building, education, and environmental action. Through these priorities, Earthwatch's supported research projects will have positive long-term impacts and will inform both local and global agendas.
