Title:                                 Catalyzing New International Collaborations

Program:                         Support of international activities is an integral part of NSF's mission to sustain and strengthen the nation's science, mathematics, and engineering capabilities. NSF recognizes the importance of enabling U.S. researchers and educators to advance their work through international collaboration and of helping to ensure that future generations of U.S. scientists and engineers gain professional experience beyond the nation's borders early in their careers.

Grants from the Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE) contribute to NSF's mission by supporting research and education activities that present unique opportunities and offer potentially high benefits through collaboration with scientists and engineers abroad. OISE support is intended to enhance current U.S. research capacity, develop a cadre of scientists and engineers who will play a leadership role in forging the international collaborations of the future, and broaden the participation of students, recent PhDs, early career faculty members, women, and minority and disabled scientists and engineers. NSF may consider proposals from U.S. institutions for collaborative work with any country that is not explicitly proscribed by the Department of State. Activities can be in any field of science and engineering research and education supported by NSF.

This solicitation offers support for the initial phases of an international collaboration with the strong expectation that the next phase will involve submission of a follow-on proposal for continued funding of the collaborative research. U.S. groups will be expected to develop a future proposal for continued funding that would be competitive in the merit-review process of the appropriate NSF program. Demand for funding of the follow-on international activities may generate new models and enhanced capabilities for supporting such projects.

Title:                                 Multicultural Scholars Program

Program:                         The purpose of the Higher Education Multicultural Scholars Program is to provide scholarships to support recruiting, engaging, retaining, mentoring, and training committed, eligible multicultural scholars, resulting in either baccalaureate degrees within the food and agricultural sciences disciplines or the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) degree. The scholarships are intended to encourage outstanding students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented and underserved in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) specifically for the USDA mission sciences, to pursue and complete baccalaureate degrees in food and agricultural sciences, or achieve a D.V.M. that would lead to a diverse and highly skilled work force. Applications are sought for student education that will: (i)prepare graduates to meet the demand for highly qualified personnel entering the STEM workforce within the food and agricultural sciences domain; (ii)pipeline more undergraduates into graduate education in USDA mission sciences; (iii)contribute to the reduction of the disparity among underrepresented and underserved populations entering graduate schools to reflect the demographics of this country and enable the American system of higher education to remain globally competitive; (iv)promote student success within food, agricultural and related science disciplines at the undergraduate/D.V.M. level; and (v)focus on student learning, academic preparation, social support structure, and professional mentoring to ensure entry into food and agricultural sciences areas and completion of graduate education or high level of competitiveness for the workforce.

Title:                                 Research and Demonstration of Innovative Drinking Water Treatment Technologies in Small Systems

Program:                         The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is seeking applications proposing to conduct research necessary to identify, develop and demonstrate novel and innovative treatment technologies and approaches for small public drinking water systems. Successful technologies should be robust, sustainable, and be able to treat or mitigate groups of contaminants or contaminant precursors in drinking water sources and systems. EPA is seeking new, or innovative, modifications of existing treatment technologies that can perform significantly better than current technologies. These technologies may include those which are used to retrofit or augment existing treatment trains; treatment practices or technologies aimed at contaminant or contaminant precursor reduction in source waters; and technologies used within the distribution system including point-of-use (POU) devices.

Title:                                 ACLS Fellowship Program

Program:                         The program invites research applications in all disciplines of the humanities and related social sciences. Appropriate fields of specialization include, but are not limited to, American studies; anthropology; archaeology; art and architectural history; classics; economics; film; geography; history; languages and literatures; legal studies; linguistics; musicology; philosophy; political science; psychology; religious studies; rhetoric, communication, and media studies; sociology; and theater, dance, and performance studies. Proposals in the social science fields listed above are eligible only if they employ predominantly humanistic approaches (e.g., economic history, law and literature, political theory). Proposals in interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary studies are welcome, as are proposals focused on any geographic region or on any cultural or linguistic group. The ultimate goal of the project should be a major piece of scholarly work by the applicant. ACLS does not fund creative work (e.g., novels or films), textbooks, straightforward translation, or pedagogical projects.

Title:                                 Conference/Seminar/Workshop Grants

Program:                         The foundation's grants provide support for research on Chinese Studies in the humanities and social sciences. The foundation will consider applications from institutions for grants to hold conferences, workshops, or seminars on specific subjects related to the foundation's goals and objectives. Applicants should submit the names of all participants, as well as titles of papers to be presented. The academic background of the participants and the significance of the meeting will be key factors in the evaluation process. In principle, the foundation does not provide funding for annual meetings. The foundation's application form requests all applicants to indicate the field of specialization for their projects. If the project is multidisciplinary, applicants should specify.
