Title:                            Interface between Computer Science and Economics & Social Sciences (ICES)
Program:                    The three divisions of CISE and the SES division of SBE seek interdisciplinary research and education projects that develop new knowledge at the Interface between Computer Science and Economics & Social Sciences. Projects should advance knowledge on both sides of the interface. Projects that use known techniques and results from Computer Science or Economics & Social Sciences to advance only one field (either CS or Econ/SS) are not of interest to the program.
Deadline:                   November 11, 2011

Title:                            Sustainability Research Networks (SRNs)
Program:                    SRNs will engage and explore fundamental theoretical issues and empirical questions in sustainability science, engineering, and education that will increase our understanding of the ultimate sustainability challenge - maintaining and improving the quality of life for the nation within a healthy Earth system. The goal of the Sustainability Research Networks (SRN) competition is to support the development and coalescence of entities to advance collaborative research that addresses questions and challenges in sustainability science, engineering, and education.  SRNs will link scientists, engineers, and educators, at existing institutions, centers, networks, and also develop new research efforts and collaborations.
Deadline:                   *Internal deadline:                October 7, 2011
Preliminary Proposal to NSF:                                   December 1, 2011
Link:                            http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=503645
Internal Process:                    If interested in proposing as PI, please submit an informal internal preproposal to me by email, margon@ucsc.edu, with a copy to your Dean, by the close of business on Friday October 7.  This document should be limited to three pages, and contain a probable although not binding list of Co-Investigators and their departments, a three to four paragraph description of the proposal, any past history of submission of this concept for funding, a very brief, preliminary budget that shows rough categories and amounts, a statement of any campus space requirements (or the statement that no space beyond that already allocated is needed), and comments on any other campus resources that will be sought in connection with the proposal.  Space comments of the nature “the Division will supply any needed additional space” are not adequate for the internal selection committee to reach a decision; please describe space discussions and commitments from your Division that have already been reached. An internal committee representing all Divisions/Schools that have proposed will reach a decision within a few days of the October 7 deadline.

Title:                            Discovery Research K-12 (DRK-12)
Program:                    The DRK-12 program seeks to significantly enhance the learning and teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) by preK-12 students, teachers, administrators and parents. All DRK-12 projects should be framed around a research question or hypothesis that addresses an important need or topic in preK-12 STEM education. The emphasis in DRK-12 is on research projects that study the development, testing, deployment, effectiveness, and/or scale-up of innovative resources, models and tools. DRK-12 invites proposals that address immediate challenges that are facing preK-12 STEM education as well as those that anticipate a radically different structure and function of pre-K 12 teaching and learning. DRK-12 especially encourages proposals that challenge existing assumptions about learning and teaching within or across STEM fields, envision the future needs of learners, and consider new and innovative ways to support student and teacher learning. DRK-12 is particularly interested in projects that hold promise for identifying and developing the next generation of STEM innovators (NSB, 2010). There are four strands described in detail in the solicitation: 1) Assessment; 2) Learning; 3) Teaching; 4) Scale-up.DRK-12 projects are based on theories of learning, prior research and development. Projects reflect the needs of an increasingly diverse population as well as national, state, or discipline priorities. Outcomes include usable and scalable resources, models, tools, and contributions to the knowledge about STEM teaching and learning.

Title:                            FDA Small Scientific Conference Grant Program (R13)
Program:                    The FDA recognizes the value of supporting high quality, small scientific conferences. A small scientific conference is defined as a symposium, seminar, workshop, or any formal meeting, whether conducted face-to-face or virtually to exchange information and explore a defined subject, issue, or area of concern impacting the public's health within the scope of the FDA's mission. Support of such meetings is contingent upon the fiscal and programmatic interests and priorities of the FDA's respective Offices and Centers.

Title:                            FY2011 Request for Proposals for the Environmental Education Sub-Grants Program
Program:                    This RFP solicits grant proposals to support EPAs mission to promote environmental stewardship and help develop knowledgeable and responsible students, teachers, and citizens. Under this RFP, EPA expects to provide financial support to eligible recipients (as defined in Section III(A)) for the development and implementation of innovative projects whose primary focus is to make and manage sub-awards to organizations, other than their own, to design, demonstrate, and/or disseminate environmental education practices, methods, and/or techniques as described in this RFP. Proposals should provide information about how they will make sub-awards that educate diverse populations on environmental issues that especially affect their local communities, including but not limited to minority, low income and tribal communities.

Title:                            Postdoctoral Fellowship for Transregional Research: Inter-Asian Contexts and Connections
Program:                    The SSRC is pleased to announce a pilot postdoctoral fellowship program that will support transregional research under the rubric "Inter-Asian Contexts and Connections." Its purpose is to strengthen the understanding of issues and geographies that don't fit neatly into existing divisions of academia or the world and to develop new approaches, practices, and opportunities in international, regional, and area studies in the United States. Funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, these fellowships will help junior scholars complete first books and/or undertake second projects. In addition to funding research, the program will create networks and shared resources that will support Fellows well beyond the grant period.

The Postdoctoral Fellowship for Transregional Research will thus provide promising scholars important support at critical junctures in their careers. As stressed by SSRC president Craig Calhoun, "Recent Ph.D.s have written brilliant dissertations bringing new excitement to the social sciences and humanities by taking on the intellectual challenges of innovative transregional work. We want to help them complete, consolidate, and expand the work they've undertaken."
