Title:                         Cyberlearning: Transforming Education
Program:                   Through the Cyberlearning: Transforming Education program, NSF seeks to integrate advances in technology with advances in what is known about how people learn to:
*better understand how people learn with technology and how technology can be used productively to help people learn, through individual use and/or through collaborations mediated by technology;
*better use technology for collecting, analyzing, sharing, and managing data to shed light on learning, promoting learning, and designing learning environments; and
*design new technologies for these purposes, and advance understanding of how to use those technologies and integrate them into learning environments so that their potential is fulfilled.

Of particular interest are technological advances that allow more personalized learning experiences, draw in and promote learning among those in populations not served well by current educational practices, allow access to learning resources anytime and anywhere, and provide new ways of assessing capabilities. It is expected that Cyberlearning research will shed light on how technology can enable new forms of educational practice and that broad implementation of its findings will result in a more actively-engaged and productive citizenry and workforce.

Title:                         NIH Director’s Transformative Research Awards (R01)
Program:                   The NIH Director’s Transformative Research Awards complements NIH’s traditional, investigator-initiated grant programs by supporting individual scientists or groups of scientists proposing groundbreaking, exceptionally innovative, original and/or unconventional research with the potential to create new scientific paradigms. Little or no preliminary data are expected. Projects must clearly demonstrate potential to produce a major impact in a broad area of biomedical or behavioral research.
Deadline:                   Letter of Intent (not required): December 12, 2011

Title:                         Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI)-Food Security
Program:                   The Food Security Challenge Area RFA focuses on the societal challenge to keep American agriculture competitive while ending world hunger. In the Food Security Challenge Area RFA, specific program areas are designed to achieve the long-term outcome of increasing food availability and decreasing the number of food insecure individuals. Project types supported by AFRI within this RFA include single-function Extension Projects, multi-function Integrated Research, Education, and/or Extension Projects and Food and Agricultural Science Enhancement (FASE) Grants. Title:                         Basic Research on Decision Making: Cognitive, Affective, and Developmental Perspectives (R01)
Program:                   This Funding Opportunity Announcement, issued as part of the NIH Basic Behavioral and Social Sciences Opportunity Network, encourages research grant applications that propose to increase understanding of the basic cognitive, affective, motivational, and social processes that underlie decision making across the lifespan.  This includes an appreciation of the interactions among the psychological, neurobiological, and behavioral processes in decision making. It also includes consideration of the mediating and/or moderating influences of genetics, physiology, the social environment, and culture.
Deadline:                   Letter of Intent (not required): December 18, 2011

Foundations

Funding Source:         Allen Foundation
Title:                         Grant
Program:                   Grants are limited under the terms of the Allen Foundation's charter to projects that primarily benefit programs for human nutrition in the areas of health, education, training, and research. The policies and priorities of the Allen Foundation are
- to make grants to fund relevant nutritional research;
- to support programs for the education and training of mothers during pregnancy and after the birth of their children, so that good nutritional habits can be formed at an early age;
- to assist in the training of persons to work as educators and demonstrators of good nutritional practices;
- to encourage the dissemination of information regarding healthful nutritional practices and habits; and
- in limited situations, to make grants to help solve immediate emergency hunger and malnutrition problems.
The connections between diet and health remain a basic and primary priority, and consideration has always been given to projects that benefit nutritional programs in the areas of education, training, and research. Low priority has traditionally been given to proposals that help solve immediate or emergency hunger and malnutrition problems. The foundation does not under any circumstances sponsor professional conferences, seminar tables, discussion panels, or similar events. One specific hope of the board of trustees in the future is to encourage the inclusion of mandatory courses in nutrition in medical schools. Another desire is to bring the promise of nutrigenomics or nutritional genomics to realization, thus creating the possibility for empowering individuals to make informed choices based on genetic information for their diet in order to influence the balance between health and disease.

Title:                          California Story Fund
Program:                    The California Story Fund (CSF) is a competitive grant program of the California Council for the Humanities (CCH). The purpose of CSF is to capture genuine and compelling stories from and about California’s diverse communities, and to ensure that those stories can be shared widely. Telling our stories can help us make sense of our existence, give us a window into other people’s lives, and make us feel part of something larger than ourselves. Sharing personal and communal narratives can enhance our understanding of where we live, with whom we live, and why we live the way we do. The Council seeks proposals for story-based projects that are informed by humanities perspectives, methods, and content; that reveal the realities of California and its cultures, peoples, and histories; and that will be of interest to local, statewide, and potentially even national and global audiences.
