Title:                            Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases (EEID)
Program:                     The Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases program supports research on the ecological, evolutionary, and socio-ecological principles and processes that influence the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases. The central theme of submitted projects must be quantitative or computational understanding of pathogen transmission dynamics. The intent is discovery of principles of infectious disease transmission and on testing mathematical or computational models that elucidate infectious disease systems. Projects should be broad, interdisciplinary efforts that go beyond the scope of typical studies. They should focus on the determinants and interactions of transmission among humans, non-human animals, and/or plants. This includes, for example, the spread of pathogens; the influence of environmental factors such as climate; the population dynamics and genetics of reservoir species or hosts; or the cultural, social, behavioral, and economic dimensions of disease transmission. Research may be on zoonotic, environmentally-borne, vector-borne, or enteric diseases of either terrestrial or freshwater systems and organisms, including diseases of animals and plants, at any scale from specific pathogens to inclusive environmental systems.

Title:                            Global Partnerships for Social Science AIDS Research (R24)
Program:                     This reissued funding opportunity announcement (FOA) calls for collaborative applications between institutions in the United States, or other developed countries, and research institutions in developing countries affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The goal of this FOA is to strengthen the research infrastructure of local institutions in developing countries and provide support for a small portfolio of high impact social and/or behavioral science research on HIV/AIDS. Activities supported under this FOA should be led by local social and behavioral scientists in partnership with scientists from the United States and/or other developed countries. Research should address social and behavioral issues in the prevention, care, and/or treatment of HIV/AIDS. The research projects and enhanced research infrastructure support should be designed to foster the emergence of local scientists as recognized leaders in behavioral and social sciences research on HIV/AIDS.

Title:                            Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellows Summer Institutes
Program:                     The Office of Citizen Exchanges, Youth Programs Division, of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) announces an open competition for two summer institutes for youth. Public and private non-profit organizations meeting the provisions described in Internal Revenue Code section 26 USC 501(c)(3), including accredited, post-secondary U.S. educational institutions, may submit proposals to provide a three- to four-week U.S.-based institute in the summer of 2013. Each institute comprises up to 45 teenagers aged 16-18 from Europe and the United States. U.S. Embassies throughout Europe will select the foreign participants, and the U.S. award recipients will select the American participants. The institutes will focus on transatlantic relations, leadership development, critical thinking, diplomacy, community activism, and the media as ways that young adults can unite around their common goals. Support for individual or small group follow-on projects in the home communities of the exchange alumni will complete the program. It is the Bureaus intent to award one or two cooperative agreements for one base year plus two option years for an estimated total of $1,350,000.

Title:                            Community Action Grants
Program:                     The AAUW Community Action Grants Program annually provides funds to individuals, AAUW branches, and AAUW state organizations as well as local community-based nonprofit organizations for innovative programs and non-degree research projects that promote education and equity for women and girls. The program's one-year grants ($2,000 to $7,000) provide funding for community-based projects. Two-year grants ($5,000 to $10,000) provide start-up funds for new projects that address the particular needs of the community and develop girls' sense of efficacy through leadership or advocacy opportunities.
