Title:                            Planning Grants for the NIH Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) (P20)
Program:                     The purpose of this FOA is to encourage institutions with expertise and innovative strategies for developing research and mentoring opportunities for undergraduate students from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research to submit applications for 6 month planning grants for the NIH BUILD initiative. The BUILD initiative aims to increase the diversity of the NIH-funded workforce by supporting collaborative programs that include novel approaches for enhancing undergraduate education, training, and mentorship, as well as infrastructure support and faculty development to facilitate those approaches. BUILD planning grants are intended to help institutions develop the necessary partnerships and infrastructure needed to be competitive for the BUILD initiative.
Deadline:                    Letter of Intent (not required): April 10, 2013
Full Proposal:              May 10, 2013

Title:                            NIH Director’s Biomedical Research Workforce Innovation Award: Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training (BEST) (DP7)
Program:                     The purpose of this FOA is to seek, identify and support bold and innovative approaches to broaden graduate and postdoctoral training, such that training programs reflect the range of career options that trainees (regardless of funding source) ultimately may pursue and that are required for a robust biomedical, behavioral, social and clinical research enterprise. Collaborations with non-academic partners are encouraged to ensure that experts from a broad spectrum of research and research-related careers contribute to coursework, rotations, internships or other forms of exposure. This program will establish a new paradigm for graduate and postdoctoral training; awardee institutions will work together to define needs and share best practices.

Title:                            Mechanism for Time-Sensitive Research Opportunities in Environmental Health Sciences (R21)
Program:                     This FOA is intended to support environmental health research in which an unpredictable opportunity has arisen to collect human biosample or exposure data (e.g., following natural or made-made disasters, health care policy changes, etc). The three distinguishing features of an eligible study are: 1) the unforeseeable nature of the opportunity; 2) the clear scientific value and feasibility of the study; and 3) the need for rapid review and funding (substantially shorter than the typical NIH grant review/award cycle) in order for the scientific question to be approached and for the research design to be implemented.

Deadline:                    May 1, 2013

Title:                            Linguistics
Program:                     The Linguistics Program supports basic science in the domain of human language, encompassing investigations of the grammatical properties of individual human languages, and of natural language in general. Research areas include syntax, semantics, morphology, phonetics, and phonology. The program encourages projects that are interdisciplinary in methodological or theoretical perspective, and that address questions that cross disciplinary boundaries, such as (but not limited to):
What are the psychological processes involved in the production, perception, and comprehension of language?
What are the computational properties of language and/or the language processor that make fluent production, incremental comprehension or rapid learning possible?
How do the acoustic and physiological properties of speech inform our theories of language and/or language processing?
What role does human neurobiology play in shaping the various components of our linguistic capacities?
How does language develop in children?
What social and cultural factors underlie language variation and change?

Title:                            New Paths to Purpose Project
Program:                     The New Paths to Purpose Project, an initiative of the Chicago Booth Center for Decision Research, is accepting Letters of Intent for projects that use behavioral science to explain or inform the ways in which people pursue, experience, or fulfill purpose in their lives. Grants of up to $250,000 will be awarded for projects that contribute to the ongoing development of rigorously scientific and readily actionable insights into the human experience of purpose. To be considered, projects must have a budget of at least $10,000 but not more than $125,000. Applications from both basic and applied behavioral science research teams are encouraged. The project also welcomes applications from principal investigators at senior and junior levels (faculty, senior research associates, postdoctoral scholars/fellows, or doctoral candidates) at educational institutions or other research centers in the United States and abroad.
Deadline:                    Letter of Intent:            May 15, 2013

Title:                            K-12 schools environmental education projects
Program:                     Flooring installation company Centiva is accepting applications from public and private K-12 schools for environmental education projects. Centiva Green School Innovation grants totaling $3,000 will be awarded to innovative, cost-effective projects that improve the environment; make schools a healthier place to learn, play, and work; and save money through reduced use of natural resources. Qualified projects must address indoor or outdoor air quality, solid waste reduction and recycling/composting, and/or water management through an integrated holistic approach emphasizing public health or environment-related issues. To be eligible, all projects must include direct environmental benefits and education as components.
