Title:                            Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program (STEP)
Program:                     STEP seeks to increase the number of students (U.S. citizens or permanent residents) receiving associate or baccalaureate degrees in established or emerging fields within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Type 1 proposals are solicited that provide for full implementation efforts at academic institutions. Type 2 proposals are solicited that support educational research projects on associate or baccalaureate degree attainment in STEM.

Title:                            Minerva Research Initiative
Program:                     The program focuses on areas of strategic importance to U.S. national security policy. It seeks to increase the department's intellectual capital in the social sciences and improve its ability to address future challenges and build bridges between the department and the social science community. Minerva brings together universities, research institutions, and individual scholars and supports multidisciplinary and cross-institutional projects addressing specific topic areas determined by the DOD. The MRI aims to promote research in specific areas of social science and to promote a candid and constructive relationship between DOD and the social science academic community. The Minerva Research Initiative competition is for research related to the 3 topics:
1. Belief Formation and Movements for Change
2. Models of Societal Resilience and Change
3. Theories of Power and Deterrence

Title:                            Andrew W. Mellon New Directions Fellowship
Program:                     The University of California, Santa Cruz has been invited to nominate one candidate for the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation's New Directions Fellowship. This is an invitation-only submission process. It is a very prestigious award that covers salary for approximately one academic year and two summers of additional support (including release time from teaching, if required). Candidates for this program should be highly qualified scholars pursuing innovative research. New Directions Fellowship assist faculty members in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who received their doctorate between six and twelve years ago and who wish to acquire systematic training outside their own disciplines. The fellowships are looking to assist faculty whose research interests cross-disciplinary boundaries and call for formal training in a discipline other than the one in which they are expert. The nominee will be decided by a committee of Social Science and Humanities faculty members.

Program:                     Grants of up to $20,000 are available to help support the research of faculty members or post-doctoral researchers affiliated with non-profit human service organizations in the United States and Canada. Areas of interest to the Fund are: studies to develop, refine, evaluate, or disseminate innovative interventions designed to prevent or ameliorate major social, psychological, behavioral or public health problems affecting children, adults, couples, families, or communities, or studies that have the potential for adding significantly to knowledge about such problems. The research for which funding is requested must focus on the United States or Canada or on a comparison between the United States or Canada and one or more other countries.
