Alan Church Environmental Steward Prelaw Award

Long time resident of the Monterey Bay Area and dedicated environmentalist Mr. Alan Church created the Alan Church Environmental Steward Prelaw Award within the Department of Environmental Studies at UC Santa Cruz in 2008 to provide an award for undergraduate students who are pursuing a career in environmental law. His early volunteer experience with native plant restoration projects led him to realize that lands, waters, and the natural animal and plant communities they support be recognized and taken into account when decisions regarding development are made. Many times litigation ensues and there is a need for specialized lawyers with a background in environmental issues.

The Alan Church Environmental Steward Prelaw Award is awarded annually to one outstanding student at the junior or senior level. The award is based on academic merit with preference given to students with a declared major in Environmental Studies who are pursuing studies leading to a career in environmental law. Students who are majoring in the biological or the physical sciences and planning to pursue a career in environmental law may also qualify to receive this award.
