Surfrider/Skye Ksander Memorial Award

This award supports a UCSC environmental studies major studying and working to protect the coastal environment.

The Surfrider/Skye Ksander Memorial Award serves to honor the memory of Skye Ksander, a local semi-professional surfer and UCSC student. In January of 1999 he was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. His friends and family organized the ‘Melanoma Awareness Surf Contest and Banquet’ to raise money for his medical expenses, but sadly, weeks prior to the contest, on July 5th 1999, Skye passed away. Before his passing Skye was asked what work he would like his family and friends to continue on his behalf. He said that he would like to see them further the Surfrider Foundation’s mission of protecting his precious ocean for future generations and to find a way to contribute to finding a cure for the devastating disease that claimed his life.

In keeping with his wishes in regard to the protecting the ocean, the local Santa Cruz chapter of the Surfrider Foundation established the Surfrider/Skye Ksander Memorial Award within the Department of Environmental Studies at UC Santa Cruz. This $500 award will benefit a UCSC environmental studies major studying and working to enhance and protect the coastal environment. The award is based on both financial need and academic merit.
