Title:                            Social Science Research on Forensic Science
Program:                     NIJ is seeking applications for funding social science research on forensic science. Some of the forensic disciplines, particularly in the area of DNA, have experienced numerous advances over the last decade. NIJ is interested in stimulating research to examine the impact of these forensic advances on the criminal justice system and changes in policies to adapt to the greater use of forensic evidence.

Title:                            Next-Generation National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NG NNIN)
Program:                     The National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NNIN) will reach its ten year authorized award life at the end of FY2013. The National Science Foundation is announcing in this solicitation an open competition to establish a Next-Generation National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NG NNIN) for Fiscal Years 2014-2018. NNIN has enabled major discoveries, innovations, and contributions to education and commerce within all disciplines of nanoscale science, engineering, and technology through NSF support of a national network of university-based user facilities. These facilities have provided open access to leading-edge nanotechnology fabrication and characterization tools, instrumentation, and expertise for users across the nation from academia, small and large industry, and government. The core mission of NNIN has included national-level education and outreach programs to enable a diverse science and engineering workforce, the study of societal and ethical implications of nanotechnology including issues of environment, health, and safety, as well as important modeling and simulation capabilities.

Title:                            Dear Colleague Letter – Accelerating Integrative Research in Neuroscience and Cognitive Sciences (AIR-NCS)
Program:                     NSF seeks proposals with the potential to transform neuroscience and cognitive science. We invite proposals that accelerate new integrative research across disciplines and across spatial and temporal scales of analysis in cognitive science and neuroscience. Such approaches will enhance our understanding of how the brain regulates the individual's biology, processes complex social and physical cues, and allows organisms to behave in and adapt to changing environments. Research aimed at understanding the brain is currently supported by virtually all of the disciplinary Directorates within the National Science Foundation (see Directorate web pages for details). For example, NSF currently funds research to better understand:
the genetic, molecular, and cellular mechanisms responsible for brain evolution, development, function, and behavior (Biological Sciences);
neural coding, signal processing, and computation; cognitive aspects of human-device interactions; brain-machine interfaces; computational neuroscience; representation and learning; and technology to support human learning (Computer & Information Science & Engineering);
brain function, neural coding, cellular/genetic mechanisms underlying neuron cell behaviors, technologies for neuroregeneration and rehabilitation, neuroimaging/sensing, and the brain-computer interface (Engineering);
STEM learning, in ways that may either inform or can be informed by neuroscience and STEM education, including brain structure/function relations, neural networks, computational neuroscience, functional imaging, neuroplasticity, and adaptive systems (Education and Human Resources);
the biophysical dynamics and chemical underpinnings of neural processes, and mathematical, statistical, and computational modeling at all analytical scales of brain function (Mathematical and Physical Sciences); and cognitive science and the neuroscience of cognition and behavior (such as language, thought, decision making, and social processes), using behavioral, neuroscience, and computational methods (Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences).

Title:                            UC Research Opportunity Fund
Program:                     The Office of Research and Graduate Studies (ORGS) has limited funds available for the one-time support of projects to stimulate new multi-campus or system-wide research. Funds are intended to initiate new projects that are expected to demonstrate a strong system-wide benefit. Projects must have strong support from the participating campuses and a clear path for development into long-term, self-sustaining programs. Funding is open to all fields, and may be used for (but is not limited to): to UC research and enhance UC’s ability to compete for external funding, advance new research areas, support innovative graduate student research, inform public policy or otherwise improve the lives of Californians.
- Workshops or Meetings to establish new system wide research initiatives or collaborations;
- Grant Development or planning for large, multi-campus extramural funding proposals;”=
- Public Outreach initiatives which can effectively communicate the impact of research discoveries;
- Industry Outreach efforts to better engage researchers from UC with industry partners; or
- Other projects of system-wide benefit to UC research.

Title:                            UC Innovative Learning Technology Initiative (ILTI)
Program:                     University of California President Mark G. Yudof recently launched an exciting and timely initiative for a faculty incentive program to support increased online course development and teaching.  The express purpose of the initiative is to expand the scope of UC-quality educational opportunities for UC students, particularly undergraduates.  Proposal funding amounts are as yet undetermined, but this dedicated funding source will offer different types of support, either as funds to a campus or as assignment of UC Online Education (UCOE) staff, for such items as:
1.     faculty compensation (e.g., summer salary, course buy-out, instructional support);
2.     technical assistance; or
3.     instructional design.
This announcement introduces a two-part request for proposals (RFP) process.  Applications for RFP Phase 1 are now being accepted.  Faculty are asked to indicate interest in developing online or hybrid courses using innovative learning technologies. Responses to the RFP Phase 1 will help identify the scope and diversity of interest in the initiative.  A subsample of interested faculty submitting Phase 1 Letters of Interest (LOIs) will be invited to an all-campus working meeting on April 13, 2013.  The Office of the Provost, the Academic Senate, and UC Online Education are sponsoring the event.
