Title:                            Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL)
Program:                     The AISL program invests in research and development of innovative and field-advancing out-of-school STEM learning and emerging STEM learning environments. The name of the program has changed from Informal Science Education (ISE) to Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL). AISL better emphasizes the priorities of the solicitation and the changes at NSF:
a. Advancing - This emphasizes that AISL seeks innovative projects that advance the field and that requests need to go beyond just proposing a new exhibit, program or film.
b. Informal - This continues to emphasize that the program is interested in out-of-school learning that makes learning Lifelong, Life Wide (occurring across multiple venues) and Life Deep (occurring at different levels of complexity).
c. STEM - This recognizes that the program is not just focused on science, but all of STEM.
d. Learning - This term is more appropriate than "education" based on what we know on how people learn. Also, "learning" is more connected with what people do for themselves, compared to "education" which is perceived as something that is done to them.

Title:                            International Research Experiences for Students (IRES)
Program:                     The IRES program supports development of globally-engaged U.S. science and engineering students capable of performing in an international research environment at the forefront of science and engineering. The IRES program supports active research participation by students enrolled as undergraduates or graduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. IRES projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the IRES program.

Title:                            NEH Summer Stipends
Program:                     The Summer Stipends program welcomes projects that respond to NEH’s Bridging Cultures initiative. Such projects could focus on cultures internationally or within the United States. International projects might seek to enlarge Americans’ understanding of other places and times, as well as other perspectives and intellectual traditions. American projects might explore the great variety of cultural influences on, and myriad subcultures within, American society. These projects might also investigate how Americans have approached and attempted to surmount seemingly unbridgeable cultural divides, or examine the ideals of civility and civic discourse that have informed this quest.
Internal Deadline:       September 1, 2012
Internal Guidelines:    The campus may submit up to two nominations.  Interested applicants should prepare a project description (no longer than 3 pages) and email it as .pdf to ihr@ucsc.edu by September 1, 2012.  A committee composed of three members of the participating divisions (Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences) will select the top two projects and send their recommendations to the Humanities Dean, the campus nominating official.  The nominees will be notified by September 10, 2012 and have until September 27, 2012 to complete and submit their NEH applications.

Title:                            Undergraduate Education Program
Program:                     Supporting pioneering discoveries in science, engineering and medical research has been and continues to be our mandate. In the area of education we support undergraduate programs that promote inventive approaches to instruction and effective involvement of students in research.  Public research universities must supply a compelling or unique resource to be competitive.  They encourage projects that are high-risk with the potential for transformative impact. "High-risk" comprises a number of factors, including questions that push the edge of the field, present unconventional approaches to intractable problems, or challenge the prevailing paradigm. In all our programs, "transformative" may mean creation of a new field of research, development of new instrumentation enabling observations not previously possible, or discovery of knowledge that challenges prevailing perspectives.
