Peter R. Stein has been selected as winner of the 2011 Distinguished Social Sciences Alumni Award for his tireless, consistent, innovative, and pioneering approaches to the field of conservation planning and development. His leadership and expertise have made a lasting impact on his field and beyond. His personal and professional dedication, commitment, and service distinguish him as a mentor and educator.
Stein has made outstanding contributions to society, and we are proud to claim him as a UC Santa Cruz Social Sciences alumnus. After graduating from UCSC and working for the Trust for Public Land, he joined the Lyme Timber Co. of Hanover, N.H. where he has "established himself as a leading force in creating a new business model for sustainable and profitable forestland investment."
To add to his already impressive resume, Stein recently received a Bridge Builders Award from Partners for Livable Communities and a Forest Champion award from the Pacific Forest Trust. Recent articles about Stein can be found in the Valley Buzz and the Ecosystem Marketplace.
The Distinguished Social Sciences Alumni Award is presented annually to graduates of the division whose careers are characterized by their sustained and exemplary contributions to society through research, practice, education, policy, or service. Award winners bring enduring honor to their alma mater as practitioners and as citizens.
We publicly honored and recognized Peter Stein at an awards presentation and reception in April 2011.
