What Award/ Scholarship did you receive?  Chancellor’s Award for Undergraduate Research

What year are you (e.g. 2016)? Class of 2014

College: Ten

Where do you call home? San Jose, CA

With all of the choices for college, what made UC Santa Cruz stand out?

For me, UC Santa Cruz offered something that other colleges did not: a chance to attend a prestigious University that was far enough away from home to allow me to be independent, but near enough for me to be close to friends and family. In addition, I jumped at the chance to be able to study in a natural environment among redwood trees and in beautiful, scenic Santa Cruz!

What is your field of focus?

My field of interest is in Cognitive Psychology. More specifically, my research focuses on how memory and cognition is being influenced by the use of technology.

What do you hope to do once you graduate from UC Santa Cruz?

Since graduation, I’ve spent my time travelling and continuing to do research on campus. I will be applying to graduate programs in psychology this upcoming fall.

What is one memorable moment that stands out for you as a student here?

During a walk to class one day, I witnessed a deer standing on the side of the road, waiting for traffic to pass. After the traffic subsided, the deer proceeded to use the crosswalk as it casually strolled across the street to the other side. It was a funny sight to see. If that isn’t building in conjunction with nature, I don’t know what is!

What is your one piece of advice for incoming students about life at UC Santa Cruz?

Enjoy yourself as much as possible while keeping an eye on the future!

How will this scholarship impact your academic life /research?

Not only will this scholarship increase my competitiveness for admission into graduate school, it will provide me with financial support as I prepare for my much anticipated future into research!
