In Their Words: Ean Brown

Ean L. Brown, a double major in the division's sociology and legal studies departments, received a Deans' Award for his research project, “32 Years After Orwellian “1984”: The Surveillance State and National Security.”

With all of the choices for college, what made UC Santa Cruz stand out? I chose to attend UC Santa Cruz because of the unique location of the campus with all the wildlife and scenery. Along with the location, UCSC was a new environment where I felt I could thrive academically while growing personally.
 
What is your field of focus? My field of focus is the intersect of sociology and law, primarily deviance and conformity and surveillance.
 
What do you hope to do once you graduate from UC Santa Cruz? My goal is to work in public safety after I complete a masters program.
 
What is one memorable moment that stands out for you as a student here? The memory that will stay with me the longest would have to be all the people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting while I’ve been here.
 
What is your one piece of advice for incoming students about life at UC Santa Cruz?
Any advice I have is aimed towards transfer students, and the advice would be to make the most of your time at UCSC both academically and socially. You only have two short years to challenge yourself and use all the recourses this school has to offer.

How will this scholarship impact your academic life /research?
This scholarship, along with support from faculty, has encouraged me to continue my research in the topic of contemporary government surveillance and pursue higher education after I receive my Bachelors Degree.
