Where do you call home? I was born and raised in San Francisco, but I’ve made homes in many places and with many people so to me home is a constantly evolving feeling where I’m safe to heal and grow.
What is your field of focus? I’m majoring in feminist studies and although I’m not sure what exactly I want to do in terms of a career, I’m interested very in social justice, community work, and art.
With all of the choices for college, what made UC Santa Cruz stand out? What do you hope to do once you graduate from UC Santa Cruz? A huge thing that sets UC Santa Cruz apart from other UCs is its unique campus. The fact that campus is situated in the middle of a redwood forest filled with wildlife is still one of my favorite things about this university, one I’m definitely going to miss once I graduate and move back to San Francisco. Although I’ll be walking in the graduation ceremonies this June, I’ll still be taking classes until the end of the calendar year. While I finish my last units, I’m planning on volunteering at the Asian Women’s Shelter in San Francisco and, if time permits, an animal shelter as well. These positions will help me network with professionals in those fields, which I’m hoping will lead me to job/career opportunities once I’m officially done with my degree.
What is one memorable moment that stands out for you as a student here? How will this scholarship/award impact your academic life/research? I have many wonderful memories thanks to UC Santa Cruz, from building close connections with people working at CAPS (the Counseling and Psychological Services on campus) to growing in spades both academically and personally. One of the most valuable things I’ll hold close to me long after graduating is how much I’ve learned in terms of analyzing and critiquing complex theories, understanding my own positionality within my communities and institutions, and utilizing this knowledge in actual practice to improve the quality of life for the communities I want to invest in. This scholarship will cover the costs of tuition for both summer and fall classes, making it possible for me to finish my degree.
