Name: Rosemary Applen

College: Porter

Department: Politics and Anthropology

What award/scholarship did you receive? Chancellor's Award

What year do you expect to graduate (e.g. 2017)? I graduated in Spring 2016.

Where do you call home? I don't have a permanent home right now.

With all of the choices for college, what made UC Santa Cruz stand out? Santa Cruz was beautiful and I wanted to be around nature.

What is your field of focus? I double majored in politics and anthropology.

What do you hope to do once you graduate from UC Santa Cruz? I have been working as an AmeriCorps member for the American Red Cross as a Disaster Preparedness Coordinator. I am currently looking into graduate programs and going on adventures. I am interested in human rights laws and environmental justice.

What is one memorable moment that stands out for you as a student here? My most memorable and educational moments at Santa Cruz were the times I spent with my best friend and academic soul mate, Olivia Arstein-Kerslake. Office hours are a great resource for getting help with your ideas but having a friend who you can bounce your thoughts off of anytime is invaluable. I could not have risen as high as I did without her raising me up and I was so lucky to have met her early on.

What is your one piece of advice for incoming students about life at UC Santa Cruz? If there's something you’re interested in, just try it.

How will this scholarship impact your academic life/research? I am going to have a stronger application when I apply for research positions or graduate programs.
