College: Oakes College

Where do you call home? I am originally from San Jose, California.

With all of the choices for college, what made UC Santa Cruz stand out? As a first generation student, I was determined to make it to college. When I was accepted to UC Santa Cruz, I knew it was where I needed to be.

What is your field of focus? Understanding the intersections of race, class, and gender within social and environmental justice issues.

What do you hope to do once you graduate from UC Santa Cruz? As an indigenous womxn, I have a commitment to serve my community. I hope to apply my knowledge and skills in a way that promotes empowerment and equity for my community and to all communities of color. As of now, I plan to attend graduate school and eventually get involved in state government in the areas of environmental policy or public health.

What is one memorable moment that stands out for you as a student here? It’s hard to define just one moment. I’ve meet such amazing people during my time here, especially within the student organizing spaces I have had the opportunity to be involved in. I have met some of my closest friends through spaces such as the Student Alliance of North American Indians.

What is your one piece of advice for incoming students about life at UC Santa Cruz? For my POC & first-gen folks, don’t self-select out, know that you are enough and your presence within this institution is an act of resistance. It’s okay to reach out for help. Use your resources and don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself. Find your community, put yourself out there and establish connections with mentors, peers, & allies that will help uplift you.
