With all of the choices for college, what made UC Santa Cruz stand out? I chose UC Santa Cruz for many reasons. For one, many of my high school teachers had attended here and all recommended the college with great enthusiasm. From the moment I took a campus tour, I fell in love with the campus for its sheer beauty and atmosphere, both of which greatly reminded me of home. As a Northern Californian, I have a special fondness for redwood forests and places where importance is placed on the nature around us. In terms of academics, I felt that I would be challenged here, which to me is only a good thing. This has proven to be true, and I am grateful for all that the college has offered me towards expanding my horizons and deepening my intrigue for how the world works.
What do you hope to do once you graduate from UC Santa Cruz? I will likely attend graduate school after I finish up my bachelor’s degree, likely in a data science program that has an emphasis on public policy and development. I am eyeing the public sector, though I would love to work at a place such as the IMF or the World Bank.
What is one memorable moment that stands out for you as a student here? The most important moments are those I spent with friends. I have connected with truly great people during my time at UCSC, especially during my time at Kresge College in building 11. During that time, my friends and I started a coffee shop out of our dorm. I would not recommend doing this, as it is against university policy and we were eventually shut down, but one has to admit that those Kresge slide-open windows in the apartments make for an excellent “drive-thru” experience. In this way, I would recommend for everyone reading this to make the best of your time here, adventure a lot, and study hard. Take academics seriously, but don’t take yourself too seriously. Enjoy.
What does this scholarship/award mean to you? This scholarship affirms that I am capable of achieving my academic goals. I didn’t even get into UCSC when I applied; I was waitlisted and told that I should plan on going elsewhere. I was rejected from every UC I had applied to. This is understandable, as I had actually flunked/gotten D’s in most of my first-semester freshmen classes in highschool, and then continued to get only mediocre grades through Junior year. It happens; highschool was a rough time for me, just as it is a hard time for many. With that, I would say that anybody is capable of shaping their lives up and reaching their goals if they’re willing to put in the effort. I’m proud of receiving this award, and I appreciate all those who made it happen. Thank you.
