Department: Sociology

What Award/ Scholarship did you receive? Fanny Carruthers Award in Sociology

When do you expect to graduate? 2023

Where do you call home? San Jose, CA

With all of the choices for college, what made UC Santa Cruz stand out? The beautiful campus, the welcoming community, and the access to professors.

What is your field of focus? I am majoring in sociology and legal studies. I have tried to take a wide breadth of classes, but my focus is definitely on public policy.

What do you hope to do once you graduate from UC Santa Cruz? After I finish my undergraduate studies, I will apply to graduate school. I have a lot of interests, so I will probably explore options in law, journalism, and academia. I am very passionate about public policy, so I know I’ll do work that studies and hopefully shapes some of the policies that govern our lives.

What is one memorable moment that stands out for you as a student here? A few days after our quarter ended, I started receiving notifications each time my Professor added an annotation to my final paper. The notifications continued for almost two hours as my Professor went through my paper to give me detailed feedback. Having a Professor take the time to give that level of detailed feedback made me feel “seen” and like I was producing something worth reading.

What is your one piece of advice for incoming students about life at UC Santa Cruz? Go to office hours! They are so helpful, even if it’s just to say “hello!” Talk to your Professors and TAs.

How will this scholarship impact your academic life /research? I often take “heavy” course loads and I recognize that if I need to take on additional work to help finance school, I will have less time to focus on my academics. This scholarship allows me to focus on my academic goals and make the most out of the limited time I have with my UCSC Professors. Next year, I’m looking forward to participating in the University’s human rights investigations lab, CERT courses, Institutional Research, Assessment, and Policy Studies program, and completing a senior thesis.
