Name: Grace Barcheck

Department: Earth and Planetary Sciences

What award/scholarship did you receive? The Hammett Fellowship

What year are you (1st year, 3rd year)? 5th year, Ph.D. Candidate

College: Graduate Division

Where do you call home? Santa Cruz

With all of the choices for college, what made UC Santa Cruz stand out? I came to UCSC specifically for the research project I’m working on.

What is your field of focus? Ice sheet response to climate change, seismology.

What do you hope to do once you graduate from UC Santa Cruz? I hope to do a postdoctoral fellowhip, and eventually become a professor.

What is one memorable moment that stands out for you as a student here? Coming home from cold, dry, white Antarctica to a California winter world of rioutous green and earthy smells.

How will this scholarship impact your academic life/research? The Hammett Fellowship will help ease the financial burden of finishing my Ph.D., because the grant that I have been supported on runs out in 2017. I'll be able to use the fellowship for some summer salary. And more importantly, I will be able to support myself to go to conferences and meetings where I can pursue postdoctoral positions with colleagues in person.
