What Award/ Scholarship did you receive? I received the Dr. Midori Arima Scholarship in Anthropology.

What year do you expect to graduate? My anticipated graduation will be in the Spring of 2021.

Where do you call home?  My home is in Castaic, California.  Castaic is in Southern California.

With all of the choices for college, what made UC Santa Cruz stand out?  I selected UC Santa Cruz primarily because of the course offerings in Anthropology that I found within the course catalog. My decision was solidified once I visited the campus and realized that I felt at home.

What is your field of focus? I am majoring in Anthropology and my primary focus within this field is Medical Anthropology.

What do you hope to do once you graduate from UC Santa Cruz?  After graduation from UC Santa Cruz, my immediate goal is to attend a graduate program in Medical Anthropology and receive my Ph.D.  I would like to focus on intergenerational trauma and how it may affect mental health.

What is one memorable moment that stands out for you as a student here? One memorable moment that took place here at UC Santa Cruz took place within my Anthropology 110G classroom.  We were discussing California history, and I realized that I didn’t actually know much at all about my State.  It dawned on me that University wasn’t simply a place of learning that prepares one for a career, but a place to revisit and reassess the education we’ve already received.  Much of what I hope to achieve in the future is dependent on my knowing the past and how it has shaped the present.

What is your one piece of advice for incoming students about life at UC Santa Cruz? If I could offer one piece of advice for incoming students, it would be to explore, explore, explore.  There are so many opportunities to immerse and engage oneself here on campus.  There are learning opportunities outside of the classroom, such as different student organizations, research and internship opportunities, and the campus itself is a place of beauty and offers its own history and treasures to uncover.

How will this scholarship impact your academic life /research? I am extremely grateful to receive this scholarship.  The award will impact my academic life in a positive way because I will be using it to acquire the necessary supplies needed for my courses, such as textbooks or additional classroom necessities.
