Sabrina Leung
Name: Sabrina Leung
College: Porter
Department: Anthropology
What Award/ Scholarship did you receive? Kathryn Cheney Merriam Scholarship
What year do you expect to graduate? Spring 2022
Where do you call home? Sacramento and Santa Cruz, California.
With all of the choices for college, what made UC Santa Cruz stand out? It’s beautiful location of being right in the middle of a forest. I’m grateful for being able to see animals run around campus freely because you don’t get that at a lot of other campuses.
What is your field of focus? Food anthropology!
What do you hope to do once you graduate from UC Santa Cruz? I hope to pursue graduate school and obtain a Master’s in food studies.
What is one memorable moment that stands out for you as a student here? Being apart of P2R was so transformative for me and helped me pursue my love of anthropology. My mentor for P2R, Katie Gougelet supported me and has continually shown up for me; for that I am extremely grateful for her. Overall the experience pushed me outside my comfort zone and has led me to do a senior thesis/independent study starting this summer and into fall quarter.
What is your one piece of advice for incoming students about life at UC Santa Cruz? Take every opportunity that you can get once because it will enrich your college experience and challenge you in ways that will help you improve as a student, an individual, and as a scholar.
How will this scholarship impact your academic life /research? This will allow me to practice ethical research as a student researcher by compensating participants of my research for their time and for any emotional labor that my questions may have caused! Information should not be seen as free information nor should people feel obligated to answer them.
