Department: Environmental Studies
What Award/ Scholarship did you receive? Concur, Inc. Award
What year do you expect to graduate? Spring 2022
Where do you call home? Santa Cruz, California.
With all of the choices for college, what made UC Santa Cruz stand out? The location, the farm and CASFS, interdisciplinarity, and diverse student body
What is your field of focus? Environmental policy, sustainable food systems, and fisheries
What do you hope to do once you graduate from UC Santa Cruz? Work with a state or municipal agency, post-doc, or teaching at California State or Cabrillo College
What is one memorable moment that stands out for you as a student here? Teaching Environmental Risk and Management during unprecedented wildfires and COVID pandemic AND the immense support received from my department towards my degree completion while I also started a family in the middle of a PhD program.
What is your one piece of advice for incoming students about life at UC Santa Cruz? Attend social function with your department, attend department and out-department seminars, and connect with an interest committee or recreational opportunities outside of your department.
How will this scholarship impact your academic life /research? I will use the CONCUR, Inc. Scholarship to help pay for publishing costs (approximately $2,900 for Frontiers of Marine Ecology). Publishing is a standard expectation of scholars, but the financial burdens associated with publishing are rarely discussed and moreover, quite surprising to a first generation student such as myself.
